There’s something about a weathered lighthouse that makes you want to stay a little longer. The faded paint, the sturdy walls, the way it stands facing the water. You start wondering about the history of the people who kept its light shining and the boats that watched for it through the darkness.
Along Canada’s ocean coastlines, a lighthouse can turn a simple seaside walk into an afternoon worth remembering. There’s fresh sea air, wind that makes you zip your jacket right up, and the sound of waves rolling against the shore. Your hair might have other plans, but that’s part of the outing.
Take your time getting there. Notice the coastal scenery, the fishing boats, and the houses tucked along the road. Let the kids watch for seabirds or imagine what it would have been like to live beside the water and tend a lighthouse through a storm. If you're lucky you might even spot a whale.
If there’s a sign telling its story, stop and read it. A name, an old photograph, or a date can make the place feel a little more familiar. Suddenly, you’re picturing someone climbing those stairs on a cold night while the wind rattled the windows.
You don’t need to fill the afternoon with activities. Follow an open public path, find a sheltered spot for a snack, and watch the water for a while. Some days, that’s plenty.
Maybe it’s the history we love. Maybe it’s the coastal character or the excuse to spend a little time by the sea. Either way, a weathered lighthouse has a way of staying with you after you’ve headed home.
