Before I head out for a walk, there’s usually a quick pocket check. Phone, keys, a bag for the dog—and a moment of wondering whether I’ve forgotten something.
For a short walk close to home, a few little things can come in handy. A tissue for a chilly nose. Lip balm on a breezy day. A small snack if “just around the block” turns into wandering a little farther.
When I’m heading onto a trail, my tick kit comes along too. I keep a clear plastic bag in it so I can save a removed tick for identification later. It takes up hardly any room, but it’s something I like having with me.
Walking with a dog adds a few extras. Spare waste bags are always useful, and a treat in your pocket can make you a very interesting person. Somehow, dogs know exactly which pocket it’s in.
Of course, pockets only hold so much. For longer walks, a small backpack gives you room for water, a layer, and the supplies your route and the weather call for.
I like the little routine of getting ready. Checking the forecast, finding my comfortable shoes, gathering what I need. Then closing the door behind me and seeing what the day has to offer.
At Canadian Threads, we celebrate these ordinary outdoor moments—the familiar trail, the neighbourhood stroll, and the dog waiting patiently while you look for your keys.
