The First Sweater Morning

The First Sweater Morning

Yesterday, a T-shirt was enough. Today, you step back inside for a sweater. There it is, that first little sign the season is turning.

The first sweater morning doesn’t always arrive with colourful leaves or frost on the grass. Sometimes it’s just a cool breeze through the screen door, chilly porch steps, and the sudden pleasure of wrapping your hands around a warm mug.

Canadian autumn has a way of introducing itself quietly. The afternoons might still feel like summer, but the mornings start asking for an extra layer. You reach for that familiar sweater tucked away since spring, and somehow it feels like greeting an old friend.

It’s a lovely time for an early morning walk. The air feels fresh, the neighbourhood is waking up, and you might notice a few leaves scattered along the sidewalk. Someone’s garden is still flowering. A squirrel hurries across a fence with somewhere very important to be.

You don’t need to rush into everything that comes with fall. There’s time yet for heavier coats and colder days. For now, enjoy this small change: sleeves pulled over your hands, comfortable walking shoes, and a little warmth against the morning chill.

If the kids are heading out with you, there will probably be a discussion about whether they actually need a sweater. Bring it anyway. Chances are, somebody will ask for it halfway down the road.

Seasonal changes give us another reason to step outside and pay attention. Even a familiar route feels a little different when the air turns cool. By lunchtime, your sweater might be hanging over the back of a chair. But tomorrow morning, you’ll know where to find it.
