The Art of Doing Nothing at the Lake

The Art of Doing Nothing at the Lake

You arrive at the lake with a chair, something to drink, and absolutely nothing you need to accomplish. No itinerary. No list of activities. Just an afternoon stretching out in front of you.
For once, that’s plenty.
There’s something about a quiet Canadian lake that makes doing nothing feel like time well spent. Little waves tap against the shore. A breeze moves through the trees. Somewhere out on the water, a canoe slips past, and you watch until it disappears around the bend.
You might bring a book and never get past the first page. You might take your shoes off, dip your toes in, or spend twenty minutes watching a bird that seems equally happy without a schedule.
That’s the beauty of a slow afternoon outdoors. You can let your attention wander without turning every moment into a task.
Family time at the lake doesn’t need much planning either. Kids can spend ages choosing stones, examining driftwood, or seeing what’s swimming near the shore. Pack a few picnic snacks, find a comfortable spot, and leave room for whatever catches their interest.
Whether you’re enjoying a cottage weekend or taking a short drive to a lakeside park, you don’t have to fill the day to make it worthwhile. Sometimes the best part is sitting together with very little to say.
Eventually, somebody gets hungry. The breeze turns cooler. You gather your things and head home, having done almost nothing—with a few lovely moments to remember.
Get up, get out and enjoy Canada. And when you get there, feel free to sit down for a while.
