Small Town Parks, Simple Pleasures

You don’t always need a hiking trail or a whole afternoon free to enjoy being outside. Sometimes a little town park is just the place—a few trees, a walking path, and a bench where you can sit with your coffee while it’s still hot.

There’s usually something going on if you take a moment to look. A squirrel is making a very important trip across the grass. A couple of birds are arguing over something only birds understand. Someone’s dog is busy sniffing every inch of the same tree it inspected yesterday. There’s no need to hurry any of them along.

Bring a friend and catch up as you walk, or go on your own and choose a shady spot. Take the kids to the swings. Bring a book, snap a picture of the changing leaves, or simply sit for a while. You don’t have to turn every trip outside into exercise or an accomplishment.

I like the familiar feeling of a small town park. You might recognize someone walking past, exchange a hello, or notice that the flower bed has changed since your last visit. Go often enough and you start to have a favourite bench, a favourite tree, or a little route you take without thinking.

Those everyday places are part of the Canadian life I want to celebrate through Canadian Threads. They’re close to home, easy to overlook, and worth making time for.

Next time you’re heading through town, leave a few minutes for the park. Your errands can wait while you finish that coffee.
