Rainy Days Have Their Own Charm

Rainy Days Have Their Own Charm

A rainy morning can make staying inside seem like the obvious choice. But pull on a raincoat, find your boots, and step outside for a little while. There’s something lovely about a day that drips instead of shines.
You notice different things on a rainy day walk. Water gathers on the tips of branches. Puddles turn familiar paths into little mirrors. The air smells of damp earth and fallen leaves, and every passing car makes that soft swishing sound along the road.
You don’t need to go far. A short neighbourhood walk or a wander through a local park gives you plenty to enjoy. Take your time and watch the raindrops make rings in the puddles. There’s no hurry when you’re already dressed to get a bit wet.
For kids, rainy day outdoor activities can be wonderfully simple. Give them rubber boots and a puddle, and they’ll usually work out the entertainment themselves. There’s always one puddle that deserves a second jump and occasionally one that turns out to be deeper than expected.
Choose a familiar route, keep away from swollen creeks, and save your outing for gentle rain rather than stormy weather. A little fresh air is lovely; soggy socks are less convincing.
Then comes the best part, getting home.
Boots by the door, jackets hung up to dry. A warm drink between your hands and something comfortable to change into. Maybe there’s soup for lunch, or a blanket waiting on the couch while the rain keeps tapping at the window.
Enjoying the Canadian outdoors doesn’t always mean blue skies and sunshine. Sometimes it’s a small walk, a few puddles, and the pleasure of coming back to a cosy home.
Get up, get out and enjoy Canada—even when you need your raincoat.
