Old Barns and Back Roads

Old Barns and Back Roads

There’s something about an old barn that makes you slow down. Maybe it’s the faded red boards, the crooked doors, or the way it sits quietly in a field, looking like it has seen a thing or two.
Take a drive along Canada’s back roads and you’ll find plenty of them. Some still shelter tractors and hay. Others have a few missing boards and a tree growing where a doorway used to be. You can’t help wondering what they looked like when they were new.
A country drive gives you time to notice those things. Split-rail fences. Cows gathered beneath a tree. A farmhouse with washing on the line. The little details of rural Canada that are easy to miss when you’re trying to get somewhere quickly.
You don’t need a big destination for a scenic drive. Pick a quiet route, bring a snack, and see what’s around the next bend. Let the kids watch for horses or count the barns along the way. Chances are, they’ll spot something you missed.
If you find a safe public place to stop, stretch your legs and take in the view. Old barns make beautiful subjects for country photography, but admire them from the roadside and respect the farms they belong to. There’s a whole working day happening beyond those fences.
Sometimes you’ll come home with a photo. Sometimes it’ll be a bag of apples from a farm stand. And sometimes you’ll simply remember a winding road and a weathered barn catching the afternoon light.
That’s a pretty good afternoon.
Get up, get out and enjoy Canada. There’s plenty to discover along the back roads.
