You might only be heading out for a bag of apples. Then you spot the pumpkins, a jar of honey, and a handwritten sign for fresh cider. Suddenly, that quick roadside stop becomes part of your afternoon.
Fall in Canada has a way of making the simple things feel special. Pulling on a comfortable sweater. Taking a country drive with no real hurry. Finding a little farm stand where the apples still have leaves tucked between them.
Let the kids choose a pumpkin, even if they pick the lopsided one. Especially if they pick the lopsided one. There’s usually a good reason, and it might be that it “looks like Dad.”
Ask what apple varieties are available and which ones are good for baking. A roadside farm stand can turn an ordinary errand into a chance to learn something, support local farmers, and bring home something grown close by.
The best fall traditions don’t need much planning. Maybe you stop at the same stand every October. Maybe you make apple crumble when you get home, with someone sneaking slices before they reach the dish. Or perhaps your tradition is simply a family outing along the back roads, seeing what catches your eye.
Those little stops give everyone a reason to slow down. There’s fresh air, something to carry home, and a story attached to it. By winter, nobody may remember how much the pumpkin weighed. They’ll remember the funny one they chose together.
Take a little time for the Canadian countryside this fall. There might be a new favourite stop just around the bend.
