Canadian Wildlife Has Personality

Some days, a short walk outdoors feels like stepping into a neighbourhood where everyone has feathers, fur, and something to say.

A squirrel stops halfway up a tree and gives you a look. You’ve apparently interrupted something important. It flicks its tail, scrambles onto a branch, and watches you pass as though it owns the whole trail.

Fair enough. It probably knows the place better than you do.

Then there are the chickadees. Small birds, big presence. You hear them before you spot them, calling from the branches while you stand there trying to work out which tree they’re in. One appears nearby, pauses just long enough for you to admire it, then disappears again.

Backyard bird watching doesn’t need to be a grand activity. Sometimes it’s simply looking up from your morning coffee.

And raccoons? They always look as though they’ve got a plan and would rather you didn’t ask about it. A tipped flowerpot or an investigated bin can leave you wondering what went on outside while you were asleep.

Canadian wildlife has a way of making ordinary moments more interesting. A familiar walking trail becomes a place to notice little dramas: a squirrel guarding its find, birds gathering around the garden, or tiny tracks crossing a muddy patch.

For kids, these encounters can turn a simple nature walk into an afternoon of questions. What’s that bird saying? Where does the squirrel sleep? Who left those footprints?

You don’t need every answer. Watching together is part of the fun. Give wild animals plenty of space, leave the snacks in your bag, and enjoy their company from a distance.

Get up, get out and enjoy Canada. The neighbours are quite a cast of characters.
