Autumn Doesn’t Last, Get Out There

There’s something about a country road in autumn that makes you want to see what’s around the next bend. The trees are showing off, the fields are busy, and a handwritten sign at the end of a driveway might be all the reason you need to stop.

Pumpkins, apples, squash, fresh eggs, every farm stand has its own little selection. You might find local honey or a bottle of maple syrup to take home, too. Bring a shopping bag and a little cash, and leave room for something you hadn’t planned on buying.

Take the kids along and let them help choose. Finding the “perfect” pumpkin can become quite an undertaking. One wants the biggest, another likes the funny-shaped one, and somehow the smallest pumpkin needs to come home as well.

A farm stand gives children a chance to get curious about where their food comes from. If the farmer has time for a chat, let them ask a question. Watching a tractor working in a distant field can be just as interesting as anything you’ve planned for the day.

Make time for a short walk, too. Find a public trail or park nearby, pull on an extra layer, and enjoy the crunch of leaves underfoot. Let the kids point out colours, look for acorns, or spot a squirrel preparing for colder days.

You don’t need to turn it into a big outing. A country drive, a roadside stop, and a little fresh air can make a lovely family afternoon.

At Canadian Threads, these everyday moments inspire us: familiar roads, changing seasons, and time outdoors with the people we love.

The leaves won’t stay on the branches forever. There’s still time to get out and enjoy them—and perhaps bring home a pumpkin.
