The plates are cleared, the kitchen is mostly tidy, and the couch is looking pretty inviting. After a busy day, settling in for the evening comes easily.
But before you reach for the remote, consider stepping outside for a little while. There’s something lovely about an after-dinner walk, especially when you have nowhere in particular to be.
You don’t need to turn it into a workout. A slow loop around the block or a wander down a familiar lane is plenty. Leave the errands for another time and give yourself a chance to enjoy what’s around you.
At this time of year, the evening air has a definite nip to it. Pull on a comfortable layer, tuck your hands into your pockets, and listen to the leaves rustling along the pavement. You might catch the smell of someone’s woodstove or notice warm light spilling from a neighbour’s window.
If you’re walking with family, let the conversation find its own pace. Sometimes, away from the supper table and the distractions at home, someone remembers the funniest part of their day. Other times, everyone is happy to walk quietly together.
And if you have a dog, chances are you’ll have an enthusiastic companion. There’s always one more fence post to investigate, even on a route you’ve walked a hundred times.
With darkness arriving earlier, choose a familiar, well-lit route. Wear something reflective, bring a light, and watch your footing where wet leaves collect.
Some evenings, ten minutes will be enough. Others, you might find yourself taking the longer way home simply because you’re enjoying it.
The couch will still be there when you get back. You’ll have a little fresh air, perhaps a good conversation, and a few moments of the evening that might otherwise have slipped past.
At Canadian Threads, we love the simple outings that fit into everyday life. You don’t always need a free afternoon or a packed bag to enjoy being outdoors. Sometimes, you just need your shoes and a few minutes after dinner.
Get up, get out, and enjoy Canada. A good place to start is right outside your door.
